What the basic position actually is

The basic position, sometimes called the low position or the sit, is the shape you hold while you glide and push. In simple terms you fold at the ankles, knees and hips so your body sinks low over the skates, your back stays long and close to flat, and your head stays up looking down the track. Your weight sits over the middle of the wheels, not on your heels and not on your toes. Both arms are relaxed, ready to swing on a sprint or fold neatly behind your back when you settle into a distance rhythm.

Why a low position makes you faster

There are two reasons the low position wins races, and they work together. The first is power. When your knee is deeply bent your leg has a long way to travel as it extends, and it is that extension, driving the wheels sideways and back, that produces speed. Stand tall and your knee is already half straight, so there is very little push left to give. Sit low and you unlock a full, long stroke from every stride.

The second reason is air. Above roughly fifteen kilometres an hour, most of the effort of skating goes into pushing air out of the way, and air resistance climbs sharply as you go faster. Building the position from the ground up

The best way to learn the stance is one joint at a time, starting where you meet the ground and working up to your head.

Ankles

Everything starts at the ankle. Drive your shins forward so your ankles bend and your weight moves toward the front of the boot. Skaters who stay stiff at the ankle end up sitting back on their heels, which kills the push and makes the skate feel twitchy. Knees

This is the big one. Bend your knees until the joint is close to a right angle, so your kneecap sits out over your toes when you look down. Hips

Let your hips sink down and slightly back, as if reaching your seat toward a low bench behind you. The hips are where the sit really happens. Keeping them low and quiet, rather than bobbing up and down each stride, is what lets you hold speed smoothly rather than fighting for it.

Lengthen your back so it runs long and close to flat, roughly parallel with the ground on a fast effort. A rounded, hunched back cramps your breathing and shifts weight onto your heels, so think tall spine folded forward at the hip, not curled over. Keep your head up and your eyes looking well down the track, which protects your neck, keeps your airway open and lets you read the skaters around you.

Arms

On a sprint or a hard acceleration the arms swing front to back in time with your legs to add drive and balance. Once you settle into a cruising rhythm, many skaters fold both hands onto the lower back to shrink their frontal area further and save energy. Either way the shoulders stay relaxed. Tension in the upper body creeps down into the legs and stiffens your whole stride.

Common mistakes and how to fix them

The most common fault is skating too tall. It feels safer and less tiring, which is exactly why it is a trap, because the effort you save is speed you give away. The fix is to bend the knees more than feels natural and to hold it, building the leg endurance over time. The second fault is sitting back on the heels, usually caused by stiff ankles or a fear of pitching forward. You do not need to be moving to train the sit. Standing off skates, drop into the position against a wall, sliding your back down until your knees reach a right angle, and hold it for thirty seconds at a time to build the endurance your thighs need. On skates, practise a long two footed glide in the low position on a straight, holding the shape without pushing and simply getting used to breathing and balancing there. Add gentle held glides on one foot to check that your weight really is centred over the wheels. Aim for a knee angle near a right angle, with your kneecap over your toes and your back long and close to parallel with the ground on fast efforts. Why do my thighs burn so much in the low position?
