Most inline speed skating advice is written for flat ground. Track work is flat by design, and even a road marathon course is usually chosen because it is as level as the organisers could find. But most of us do not train on a track. We train on whatever road is near the house, and in India that road very often climbs, dips under a flyover, rises over a bridge and comes back down the other side. Skaters who only ever practise on flat ground get a shock the first time a route tilts. Climbing feels like skating through treacle, and descending feels like the skates have decided to go somewhere without you.
Hills are not something to avoid. Handled well, a climb is the best strength session you can get on skates, and a descent teaches balance and confidence that no flat loop can. This guide covers both sides of the slope: how to climb without burning out, how to descend without frightening yourself, how to manage speed when there is no brake on your boot, and how to set your wheels, bearings and frame up for a route with real gradient in it. It is written for road skaters on speed setups, and it assumes you can already skate comfortably on the flat.
Why hills feel so different on speed skates
On a flat road, the work of skating is pushing sideways against the wheels' grip and then gliding on the roll. Gravity is not part of the picture. On a climb, gravity is pulling you straight back down the slope the whole time, so every glide phase is shorter and every push has to overcome that pull before it adds any speed. On a descent the same force works for you, and because a speed skate has big wheels and fast bearings and nothing at all that resembles a brake, that free speed builds faster than most skaters expect.
The second difference is your body. A low, forward, aerodynamic position is fast on the flat and even faster downhill. Uphill, that same position points your hips into the slope and shortens your stride. So climbing and descending each ask for a different version of your basic stance, and knowing when to switch is most of the skill.
Climbing: short strides, high cadence, weight forward
The instinct on a climb is to push harder and longer, exactly as you would to accelerate on the flat. It is the wrong instinct. Long strides on a slope mean long glide phases, and on a slope a glide is where you lose speed to gravity. The skaters who climb well do the opposite. They shorten the stride, quicken the rhythm and keep the wheels loaded almost all the time.
Shorten the stride and lift the cadence
Think of dropping down a gear on a bicycle. On a flat road you might take a long, powerful push and enjoy a good second of glide. On a climb, aim for pushes that are perhaps half the length, with barely any glide between them, so there is always one skate driving. Your cadence will feel quick and busy. That is correct. Keep the pushes directed slightly more backwards than on the flat, because you are now fighting a force that acts straight down the slope, and a push that is too sideways spends energy going nowhere.
Bring the weight forward over the front wheel
On a climb your hips want to fall behind your feet, and when they do, the skate starts to feel like it is running away from under you. Counter it by leaning your whole body into the slope from the ankles, not by bending at the waist. Your nose should feel like it is over your toes. This keeps your weight over the middle and front of the frame, where you can push from it, and it stops the back wheel from becoming the only one doing any work.
Use the arms and keep the head up
On the flat, arms behind the back are efficient. On a steep climb, swinging both arms in the direction of travel adds rhythm and helps you hold the quick cadence, exactly as it does in a sprint start. Keep the head up and look twenty metres ahead. Looking at your wheels on a climb tips the shoulders forward and rounds the back, which collapses the hip angle you are trying to keep open.
On the flat you earn free distance in every glide. On a climb the glide is where gravity takes speed back, so you shorten the stride and keep one wheel pushing at all times.
If the climb is too steep to skate
There is a gradient beyond which skating uphill stops being efficient and becomes a slow stagger. When you reach it, do not be proud. Turn the skates outwards into a V and walk up on the inside edges with short duck steps, or use a herringbone pattern the way a cross country skier does. A few metres of walking costs you far less than a fall from a stalled stride on a slope, and it keeps your legs for the rest of the ride.
Descending: low, quiet and looking far ahead
Descending is where road skaters get hurt, and almost every descent crash has the same root cause: the skater stood up. When speed builds and nerves rise, the body straightens, the arms come out, the knees lock, and the skater becomes a tall, stiff object balanced on a narrow line of wheels. The fix is the opposite of the instinct. Get lower, get quieter and look further ahead.
The descending stance
Drop into a deep knee bend with the skates roughly hip width apart, one skate a little ahead of the other so you have a longer base against front to back wobble. Keep your weight centred over the middle of the frame, not on the heels. Hands come in front of you, low, where they can help you balance and where they will meet the ground first if something goes wrong. Relax the shoulders and let the knees act as suspension for every bump in the tarmac. A stiff skater feels every crack in the road. A relaxed one rolls over them.
Eyes up, and scan for the things that stop you
At speed the road comes at you fast, and the things that can end a descent are small: a patch of loose gravel, a speed breaker, a drain cover, a wet patch under a tree, a dog. Look as far down the hill as you can see and keep scanning between far and near. On a road you have not skated before, walk or skate the descent slowly the first time. Every experienced road skater has a story about the speed breaker they did not know was there.
Do not tuck unless you want to go faster
An aerodynamic tuck is a speed tool, and on a descent it is a powerful one. When you fold low and narrow, air resistance drops and you accelerate. That is exactly what you want at the end of a race and exactly what you do not want on an open road with a junction at the bottom. On a descent, treat your body as a sail. Stay low for balance, but keep the chest open and the arms slightly out when you want to hold or reduce your speed, and only fold into a real tuck when the road ahead is clear and you actively want to go faster.
Your body is the only brake you carry on a speed skate. Staying low keeps you balanced, but how open you are decides how fast the hill lets you go.
Speed control without a heel brake
Speed skates have no brake, so speed control on a descent is a set of techniques you apply early and gently rather than one thing you do at the bottom. The golden rule is to scrub speed before you need to, while you still have room and the skates are still calm. Braking hard at the last moment is exactly what a speed setup is worst at.
Scrub speed with wide, shallow turns
The gentlest way to hold a descent to a sensible speed is to carve long, shallow S turns across the road, the way a skier does. Each turn puts the wheels slightly across the direction of travel and bleeds a little speed through the tyres, and because the turns are shallow and progressive they never upset your balance. Keep the knees soft and lead each turn with the hips and shoulders, not by twisting the feet. This only works when you have the width of the road to yourself, so on a narrow or busy road use it sparingly.
Stagger the skates and let one drag
With one skate a little ahead of the other, you can let the rear skate angle slightly across the line and take a fraction of your weight, so its wheels scrub rather than roll. It is a gentle version of the T stop, applied continuously rather than as a single hard braking action. It costs wheel wear, so it is not something to do for a full kilometre, but it is the technique that gets you down the last steep section before a junction with everything still under control.
Know your emergency stop before you need it
Every road skater should be able to perform at least one proper stop from speed without thinking about it, and a descent is the wrong place to learn one. The bail out plan
Sometimes the sensible option is not to skate a descent at all. If a hill is steeper than you have practised, if the surface at the bottom is unknown, or if there is traffic or a blind bend, walk it on the grass verge. There is no prize for skating down a hill you are not ready for, and there is a very real cost for getting it wrong on tarmac at speed.
Setting up your skates for a hilly route
Technique matters most, but your equipment changes how much margin you have. A setup tuned purely for flat road speed can make hills harder than they need to be, and a couple of small choices tilt the odds in your favour.
Wheels: choose grip over outright roll
On a descent, the one thing you cannot have too much of is grip, because every speed control technique above depends on the wheels holding while they are angled across the road. Bearings: smooth and sealed beats loud and fast
Descending is not a bearing speed problem. Gravity gives you all the speed you need, so a bearing with the fastest possible spin is not what a hilly road rewards. What you want is a bearing that runs smoothly, absorbs vibration from rough tarmac and keeps road grit out. Frame: length and wheel size are a trade off
A longer frame with bigger wheels tracks straighter and rolls faster, which is superb on a smooth descent and slightly harder work on a tight, steep climb where you want quick, short strides. Protection: the non negotiables for a hilly road
You will fall on a descent eventually. Everyone does. What decides whether it is a story or an injury is what you are wearing. How to build up to real hills
Do not start on the biggest hill in town. Find a short, gentle slope with a long, flat, empty run out at the bottom, and practise descending it in the low open stance until you are relaxed. Then add the shallow carved turns, then the staggered drag, and only when all three are calm should you look for something longer or steeper. Climbing can be practised anywhere: pick a gradual rise, work on the short quick stride until it is smooth, and use the climb as a strength interval. Ten repeats of a one minute climb, with an easy roll back down, is one of the best leg sessions you can do on wheels.
Above all, learn a route before you skate it fast. Walk it, or roll it slowly, and note every speed breaker, drain, patch of gravel and blind corner. The descent you know is the one you can enjoy.
Frequently asked questions
Can I skate uphill on 110mm or 125mm wheels?
Yes. Bigger wheels take a little more effort to get moving, but the short, quick stride described above works on any wheel size. What matters more is keeping your weight forward and avoiding long glides on the slope.
Should I use harder wheels for hills because they roll faster?
No. On a descent you want the wheels to grip while angled across the road, and on a wheel like the Road Reaper 110 the softer XFirm compound at 84 to 86A does that better than XXFirm at 86 to 88A. Save the harder wheels for a flat, fast track.
Do I need faster bearings to descend well?

How steep is too steep?
There is no fixed number, because it depends on your skill, your wheels and the road surface. The honest test is whether you can hold a speed you are comfortable with using the techniques in this guide. If you cannot, the hill is too steep for today, and walking it is the right call.
Hills reward patience. Learn the climbing stride, build the descending stance on gentle slopes, set your wheels up for grip rather than roll, and wear the protection every time.
