Skaters will happily argue for an hour about wheel hardness or bearing oil, and then strap on a helmet that has been through three crashes, two monsoons and five summers in a kit bag without a second thought. That is backwards. A helmet is the one piece of equipment whose whole job is to fail on your behalf, exactly once, so that your skull does not. Once it has done that job, or once time and heat have quietly taken away its ability to do it, it needs to go.
This guide is about knowing when that moment has arrived. It covers what actually happens inside a helmet during an impact, how to inspect a lid after a fall, how age and Indian weather wear a helmet out even if you never crash, how to spot a fit that has drifted, and what to look for when you finally replace it. It applies to inline and road skaters as well as short track skaters, because the physics of foam is the same on tarmac and on ice.
Why a helmet is a single use safety device
Almost every skate helmet worth wearing is built the same way: a hard outer shell (usually polycarbonate, often written PC) bonded over a liner of expanded polystyrene, the EPS foam you can see if you peer through the vents. The shell is not what saves you. The shell spreads the impact over a wider area, resists abrasion as you slide, and stops sharp objects punching through. The foam does the real work. When your head hits the ground, the millions of tiny closed cells in the EPS crush and collapse, and that crushing is what converts a violent stop into a slightly slower stop. A few extra milliseconds of deceleration is the difference between a headache and a serious injury.
Here is the catch. Crushed EPS does not spring back. Rubber rebounds, foam mattresses rebound, but EPS is designed to deform permanently so that it absorbs energy instead of returning it. A zone of foam that has already collapsed has spent its protection. The next hit in the same spot goes through much thinner, much stiffer material, and far more of the force reaches your head.

Rule one: any real crash means a new helmet
If your head hit the ground, the boards, the mats or another skater hard enough that you felt it through the helmet, replace the helmet. This is true even if the outside looks perfect. The shell is designed to spring back and hide damage, and the foam is hidden underneath it. A helmet that looks fine after a hard hit is not evidence that it is fine, it is evidence that the shell did what shells do.
Skaters resist this because helmets cost money and the damage is invisible. Think of it the way you think about a set of blades that has been bent in a crash: you would not race on them just because the steel still looks shiny. The helmet has been used up in exactly the same way.
A gentle tap when you sat down on the ice, or the helmet rolling off the bench onto the floor, is not a crash. A slide into the mats where your head whipped back and made contact, a fall backwards on tarmac, a collision in a pack, or any hit where you were dazed even briefly, absolutely is.
How to inspect a helmet after a fall
Even when you are fairly sure the hit was minor, do a proper inspection before you wear the helmet again. Work through the helmet in a fixed order so you do not skip anything. Do it in good light, with the padding removed if your helmet allows it (the LiveLica helmets have removable, washable padding, which makes this easy).
The shell
Look for cracks, especially radiating out from vent holes and from the edges where the shell is thinnest. Look for dents or flat spots, and for any place the shell has separated or lifted away from the foam underneath. A scuff or a scratch in the paint on its own is cosmetic. A crack is not.
The foam liner
Look through the vents and around the rim at the EPS. You are looking for cracks in the foam, compressed or dished areas that feel firmer or look denser than the surrounding foam, and crumbling at the edges. Press gently with your thumb across the whole inside. A crushed zone often feels slightly hard and glassy compared with the fresh foam beside it.
Straps, buckle and fit system
Check that the strap anchors have not pulled or torn where they enter the shell. Check the buckle for cracks and that it still clicks and locks firmly. Turn the rear dial (if you have one) through its full range and make sure it still ratchets cleanly and holds. A fit system that slips will let the helmet ride back on your head, and a helmet on the back of your head protects your forehead about as well as a hat.

Rule two: helmets wear out even if you never crash
This is the part most skaters do not know. EPS foam and the plastics in the shell, straps and buckle all degrade over time. Ultraviolet light makes plastic brittle. Heat cycles (a kit bag in a car boot in May, then an air conditioned rink) slowly break down foam structure. Sweat, salt, sunscreen and hair products soak into the padding and the foam. None of this is visible, and all of it reduces how much energy the helmet can absorb.
Many helmet manufacturers suggest replacing a helmet after roughly three to five years of use even with no impacts, and sooner if it is used daily in hot conditions. In most of India, with strong sun for much of the year and long hot seasons, treat the shorter end of that range as your target, and treat any helmet older than five years as retired regardless of how it looks.
Write the month and year you bought the helmet somewhere on the inside with a marker. It takes ten seconds, and in three years you will not have to guess.
Signs of age to look for
- The shell has faded, chalked or gone dull in patches, especially on the top where the sun hits it.
- The foam has yellowed, or crumbles when you press a fingernail into it at the rim.
- Straps have gone stiff, frayed or curled, or the buckle has turned pale and brittle.
- The padding no longer springs back and the helmet feels loose even with the dial tightened fully.
- The inside has a permanent smell that washing no longer removes, which usually means sweat has soaked into the foam itself.
Rule three: a helmet that no longer fits is a helmet that no longer works
A helmet only protects the parts of your head it is sitting over. As the padding compresses over a season, the fit loosens, and skaters compensate by cranking the rear dial tighter and tighter. Eventually the dial is at its limit and the helmet still rocks. At that point the fit system has run out of range, and the helmet will move on impact, which means it may not be where you need it when your head meets the ground.
Fit drifts for other reasons too. Junior skaters grow. A helmet sized for a 55 to 58 cm head, which is the range for the LiveLica helmets, will be outgrown, and a helmet that is too small perches high on the head and leaves the temples and the back of the skull exposed. Weight loss, a new haircut, or switching from a thick cap underneath to nothing can all shift the fit enough to matter.
The fit check you should do every few weeks
Put the helmet on and close the buckle. It should sit level, with the front edge about two finger widths above your eyebrows. Tighten the dial until the helmet is snug all the way around with no pressure points. Adjust the chin strap so you can fit two fingers between the strap and your chin, and no more. Now shake your head firmly, forward and back, side to side. The helmet should move with your head, not after it. If it slides back to expose your forehead, or rocks side to side, tighten again and repeat. If it will not pass the shake test even with everything at its tightest, the helmet has reached the end of its useful fit.

Care that makes a helmet last its full life
You cannot make a helmet immortal, but you can stop it dying early. Most premature helmet deaths are caused by heat, chemicals and rough handling rather than skating.
- Never leave a helmet in a parked car, on a scooter seat, or on a sunny windowsill. Heat inside a closed vehicle in an Indian summer is more than enough to soften and warp EPS.
- Wash the padding, not the foam. On helmets with removable padding, take the pads out, wash them gently in mild soap, dry them in the shade and refit. Wipe the shell and foam with a damp cloth only.
- No solvents, no petrol, no strong cleaners, no stickers with aggressive adhesive. Many of these attack polycarbonate and EPS.
- Carry it in the top of your bag or clipped outside, not under a frame and eight wheels. Repeated crushing in a bag compresses foam just as a small impact does.
- Dry it after every session. Sweat left to sit is what causes both the smell and the slow chemical breakdown of the liner.
Choosing the replacement
When it is time, buy for protection first and looks second. The things that actually matter are certification, construction, fit range and weight, in that order.
Look for a stated certification. CE EN1078 is the recognised European standard for skate and cycle helmets and is a sensible baseline for road and inline skating. Measure your head before you order. Wrap a tape around the widest part of the head, just above the ears and eyebrows, and read the number in centimetres. If you are outside a helmet's stated range, do not try to make it work with the dial. The dial is for fine tuning, not for rescuing the wrong size.

Frequently asked questions
I crashed but the helmet looks completely fine. Do I really need a new one?
If your head hit something hard enough to feel it through the helmet, yes. The shell is designed to hide damage by springing back, and the crushed foam underneath cannot be seen from outside. A helmet that has absorbed one real impact has spent the protection you paid for.
My helmet fell off a shelf onto a tiled floor. Is it ruined?
Usually not. A short drop with nothing inside it is a very different load from a head at skating speed. Inspect it using the five point check above and, if there are no cracks, dents or foam damage, carry on using it.
How old is too old for a helmet I have never crashed in?
Many manufacturers suggest three to five years. In hot, sunny conditions and with daily use, lean towards three. Beyond five years, replace it regardless of appearance.
Can I use one helmet for both inline and short track?
You can wear any properly fitting helmet for training, but the two disciplines favour different designs. Heavily vented, light helmets suit road and inline skating in the heat. Short track favours a compact, hard shelled lid that sits well with a race hood and copes with close contact. Check what your federation or club requires for competition.
Does washing the padding weaken the helmet?
No, as long as you only wash removable padding in mild soap and never soak or scrub the foam liner itself. Clean pads actually extend the helmet's life by keeping sweat and salt out of the foam.
Can I fix a cracked shell with glue or tape?
No. A cracked shell no longer spreads impact across the foam, and adhesives can attack the plastic. Replace it.
A helmet is the cheapest insurance in the sport. Inspect it after every fall, date it when you buy it, keep it out of the sun, and replace it without arguing with yourself when any of the four questions above gets a yes. Your blades, wheels and bearings can all be replaced after a bad day. Your head cannot.
