Bearings are the cheapest way to make a fast skate faster. They sit between your wheels and your axles, and they decide how much of your push turns into forward speed and how much disappears as friction and heat. A good set feels like the skate keeps rolling long after you stop pushing. A tired or badly matched set feels like skating uphill on a flat road.

This guide covers the bearings we actually stock and skate on at LiveLica, what separates each tier, and how to choose the right set for your level and your budget. What actually makes a bearing fast

Four things matter far more than the number printed on the shield.

  • Precision of the races. The inner and outer rings are the surfaces the balls run on. The rounder and smoother those surfaces are, and the tighter the tolerances, the less energy is lost every single rotation. This is where the real money goes in a premium bearing.
  • Ball material and finish. Steel balls are tough, forgiving and easy to live with. Ceramic balls (silicon nitride, written Si3N4) are harder, lighter and rounder, and they do not gall against the steel races, so they run cooler and hold their speed for longer.
  • Lubricant. Thick grease protects well but drags. Light oil is fast but needs attention. What is inside the bearing when it leaves the box changes how it feels on day one.
  • Shields and seals. Rubber seals keep dirt and water out but touch the inner race and cost you a little speed. Metal shields or removable shields are faster but let more grit in, so they demand a cleaning routine.

Notice that ABEC rating is not on that list. ABEC measures manufacturing tolerance, not speed, and it says nothing about ball material, lubricant or how the bearing behaves under the side load of a corner. A well made ABEC 7 will beat a badly made ABEC 9 every time. Treat ABEC as one clue, not as a score.

Steel or ceramic, the short answer

If you are still learning to hold a lap and your skates live in a bag between sessions, steel is the sensible answer. It costs less, it survives neglect, and the speed difference at your current output is smaller than the difference a better push would make.

If you are racing, training most days, and you already clean and oil your kit, ceramic starts to pay you back. It runs cooler on long efforts, it holds speed better through the second half of a race, and it copes far better with humidity and rain. Either way, every set in the range below is a standard 608 bearing (8 mm bore, 22 mm outer, 7 mm wide) unless it says 627 in the name.

Power Bearings Red, 9,080 rupees

Power Bearings Red is the entry into the range and the set we point most new racers toward. It is honest precision steel with a sensible lubricant, and it gives you a genuine racing bearing without asking for a racing budget. If you are moving up from whatever came fitted in your first skates, the jump in roll is immediately obvious.

Best for: first season racers and club skaters who want a real upgrade without overspending.

Power Bearings Super, 10,850 rupees

Power Bearings Super is the all rounder of the range and probably the most broadly useful set we sell. It sits close to Red on price but tightens things up where it matters, and it is happy being trained on all week and raced at the weekend.

Best for: the skater who wants one set that does everything and does not want to think about it again.

Power Bearings Swiss Steel Ball, 12,030 rupees

Swiss Steel Ball is where the range starts to feel properly precise. Higher grade steel balls in better finished races give a cleaner, quieter roll and a longer glide, and they hold that feel for longer before the set needs attention.

Best for: committed steel users who want the best steel feel before spending on ceramic.

Power Bearings 627 ABEC 11, 12,030 rupees

The 627 ABEC 11 exists for skaters on 627 sized axles rather than the more common 608. If your frames and wheels are built around 627, this is your entry into the precision end of the range. Check your axle size before ordering, because 608 and 627 are not interchangeable.

Best for: 627 setups, including quad speed skates, that need a serious bearing.

Power Bearings Blackening, 13,800 rupees

Blackening is a steel bearing with a blackened surface finish, tuned for a fast, smooth and low vibration roll. 6 Ball Ceramic combines both ideas above. Ceramic balls for low friction and heat resistance, six of them rather than seven for an even freer spin. It is a fast, deliberate racing bearing.

Power Bearings Colorful Titanium Ceramic, 27,370 rupees

Colorful Titanium Ceramic pairs Si3N4 ceramic balls (Grade 7 precision) with top grade steel races, then adds a titanium coat to the races for longevity as well as looks. The manufacturer rates it around 50 percent lighter than a standard steel bearing and 40 percent stronger. It also happens to look superb in a wheel, which nobody has ever admitted is a reason to buy bearings.

Best for: racers who want top end ceramic performance with real durability.

Power Bearings Swiss Ceramic, 36,500 rupees

Swiss Ceramic puts Si3N4 ceramic balls in a precision race with a nylon thermo moulded cage and double lumen seals, which is the combination most serious racers land on. According to the manufacturer it saves roughly 0.8 to 1.0 watts per bearing against typical precision steel, and across sixteen bearings over a long race that adds up. This is a set you buy when your own engine is good enough that the equipment is the limiting factor. Skaters on 627 axles should look at the Swiss Ceramic 627 version at 30,500 rupees, which also suits quad setups.

Best for: national level racers and anyone whose season comes down to fractions.

Power Bearings Speed Minimizer, 50,000 rupees

The Speed Minimizer is the flagship and it makes no apology for the price. It is not a standard bearing at all but a complete mini bearing racing system: nine ceramic balls per bearing, Pro aluminium axles, one piece outer aluminium adaptors and in line spacers, all matched to work as one unit. It is built for skaters who have exhausted every other variable in their setup and want the fastest bearing in the range. It is not a sensible first upgrade and we will happily talk you out of it if your money is better spent elsewhere.

Best for: elite racers chasing the last fraction of a second.

608 or 627, check before you buy

This catches people out constantly. Most inline speed skates use 608 bearings, which have an 8 mm bore. Some setups, particularly certain frames and quad configurations, use 627 with a 7 mm bore. The outer dimensions are close enough to look identical in a photo and they will not fit each other. Look at your axle, or ask us before you order, because a returned set helps nobody.

How other global brands compare

Bones, Bont, Twincam and Matter all come up in any bearing conversation and all have earned their reputations. We do not stock them at LiveLica, so we are not going to quote you specifications we cannot stand behind. What we can tell you is that the market splits the same way everywhere: precision steel at the sensible end, ceramic in the middle, and full ceramic with premium races at the top. Judge any brand against the four points at the top of this guide rather than against the badge on the shield.

Looking after them, whatever you buy

A cheap bearing that is clean and oiled will comfortably beat an expensive bearing full of grit. The routine is not complicated.

  • Wipe the outside of your bearings and the inside of your wheels after any dusty or wet session.
  • Never leave them wet. Water sitting inside a bearing overnight does more damage than a month of hard skating.
  • Strip, clean and re oil them when the roll goes noisy or short, rather than waiting for them to seize.
  • Use a proper skate bearing oil such as Speedslick Pro (500 rupees a bottle). Household oils are either too thick and slow you down, or too thin and evaporate away.
  • Rotate your wheels regularly. Even wear keeps the load even across all sixteen bearings.

Frequently asked questions

How many bearings do I need?

Sixteen for a standard pair of four wheel inline speed skates, two per wheel. A three wheel setup needs twelve. Check how each set is sold on its product page before you order.

Will better bearings actually make me faster?

They will help you keep the speed you generate, which is not quite the same thing. Bearings reduce what you lose. They do not add power. A skater with a good push on steel will beat a skater with a poor push on ceramic every time.

Is ABEC 9 always better than ABEC 7?

No. ABEC describes manufacturing tolerance only. It tells you nothing about ball material, lubricant, seals or how the bearing handles side load in a corner. Ignore the number and look at the build.

Do ceramic bearings still need oil?

Yes. Ceramic handles heat and water better than steel, but it still needs clean, light oil to spin freely and protect the steel races.

How long should a set last?

With regular cleaning and oiling, a good set will last seasons rather than months. Neglect them, skate them wet, and you can destroy a premium set in weeks.

Can I mix ceramic and steel?

You can, and nothing will break, but you will not get a consistent feel across the skate. If you are upgrading, do the whole set.
