The Power Bearings Swiss Ceramic is a top tier hybrid ceramic bearing built for inline speed skating and long distance racing, where every watt saved matters. It uses silicon nitride (Si3N4) ceramic balls in a precision race, the combination most serious racers reach for when their own engine is good enough that the equipment becomes the limiting factor.

Why ceramic, and why Si3N4

Ceramic balls are harder, rounder and lighter than steel, and they do not gall against the steel races under heat the way steel on steel can. That means a ceramic bearing runs cooler on long efforts, holds its speed better through the second half of a race, and copes better with heat and moisture. Silicon nitride is the ceramic material used in the best skate and industrial bearings for exactly these reasons.

The numbers

According to the manufacturer, the Swiss Ceramic delivers the following against a typical precision steel bearing.

  • 50% lighter than steel equivalents, which reduces rotating weight at the wheel.
  • 40% more robust, for durability under racing loads.
  • Up to 100,000 rpm twist rate under load, showing how freely it runs at speed.
  • 0.8 to 1.0 watts of energy saved per bearing compared to typical precision steel, which adds up across sixteen bearings over a long race.

How it is built

The bearing uses a nylon thermo molded cage that positions each ball accurately in the raceway for smooth, consistent rotation. Double lumen seals on polished rims give an almost frictionless shield against dust and water, which matters when you skate in changing conditions. The Si3N4 hybrid ceramic is cryogenically treated at minus 300 degrees Fahrenheit, a process the maker uses to refine the molecular structure for efficiency and durability.

Fit and compatibility

This is a standard 608 bearing, measuring 8mm bore by 22mm outer by 7mm wide, in the 608RS sealed format. That fits the majority of inline speed skate wheels. Check that your setup uses 608 rather than the smaller 627 before ordering, because the two are not interchangeable. A standard pair of four wheel inline skates needs sixteen bearings.

Keeping them fast

Ceramic tolerates heat and water better than steel, but it still needs to be kept clean and lightly oiled to run at its best. Wipe them down after dusty or wet sessions, and re oil with a light skate oil such as Speedslick Pro when the roll goes short or noisy.

Frequently asked questions

Are ceramic bearings worth it?

For serious racers who train regularly and maintain their kit, yes. Ceramic runs cooler, holds speed on long efforts and lasts well. For beginners, good steel is usually the smarter spend until your skating outgrows it.

Will these fit my skates?

They fit standard 608 wheels (8mm x 22mm x 7mm). If your frame or wheels use 627, they will not fit. Check your axle size or ask us before ordering.

How many do I need?

Sixteen for a standard pair of four wheel inline speed skates, two per wheel.

Do ceramic bearings still need oil?

Yes. Ceramic handles heat and water better than steel, but it still needs clean, light oil to spin freely and protect the races.
