Ask any short track skater what their most expensive piece of kit is and the answer is almost always the same. The blades. A good pair of runners costs more than most of the rest of the setup put together, and yet the thing that kills them is rarely a crash or a bad sharpen. It is water. A thin film of melted ice left sitting on ground steel inside a closed bag is all it takes to start pitting an edge, and once rust has bitten into the running surface you are grinding metal away to get back to clean steel. Every sharpen after that takes life off the blade.

The frustrating part is that blade care is genuinely simple. It takes about ninety seconds after every session, and it needs two cheap accessories that most skaters own but many use the wrong way round. Hard guards and fabric soakers look like they do the same job. They do not. Using the wrong one at the wrong moment is one of the most common ways skaters damage their own steel. This guide explains what each one actually does, why blades corrode in the first place, how to read rust once it has started, and the routine that keeps a set of runners sharp and clean for years.

Why short track steel rusts so quickly

Ice is water. When you skate, the blade edge melts a microscopically thin layer of it, which is exactly what lets you glide. When you step off the ice, that water is still there, sitting on freshly ground steel. Blade steel is hardened for edge retention rather than corrosion resistance, so it is chemically happy to react with moisture and oxygen. Rust starts as a dull grey haze, then becomes orange speckling, then pits.

Two things speed the process up. The first is grit. Dust, arena floor debris and stray fibres hold moisture against the steel long after the surface would otherwise have dried. The second is a sealed environment. Zip a damp pair of skates inside a bag and the moisture has nowhere to go, so the humidity around the blade stays close to saturated for hours. What blade guards actually do

Guards are the hard plastic covers. Their only job is to protect your edges while you walk. Rink floors, rubber matting, changing room tiles and the concrete outside all chew steel, and a single unguarded step onto a hard floor can put a nick in an edge that you will feel for the rest of the session. Walking on bare steel also dulls the edge evenly, which means more sharpening, which means a shorter blade life.

What soakers actually do

Soakers are the soft fabric covers, and they do the opposite job. They are for storage, not walking. The ninety second post session routine

Here is the sequence that protects your steel. It is worth doing every single time, including after a short session, because a twenty minute skate leaves just as much water on the blade as a two hour one.

Step one, guards on at the barrier

Step off the ice and fit your guards straight away. Do not walk even one step on bare steel.

Step two, sit down and take the skates off

Get the boots off before the blades cool and the moisture settles, which also stops you standing around on a hard floor longer than necessary.

Step three, remove the guards and dry the blade

Pull the guards off and wipe the whole blade down with a dry cloth. Do the running surface, both sides of the tube, the lips, the cups and the mounting bolts. Water sits in the corners around the cups just as happily as it sits on the steel.

Step four, let the steel air for a few minutes

If you can, leave the blades uncovered while you change. A few minutes of open air does more for a blade than any product.

Step five, fit soakers for the bag

Slide the soakers on and pack the skates. At home, take the skates out of the bag, pull the soakers off and let both the blades and the soakers dry fully before the next session. Checking your edges while you dry them

The drying routine is also the best moment to inspect the steel, because your hands are already on the blade. Run a fingertip lightly along the side of the edge, never across it, and feel for anything raised or catchy. A small lip of metal, called a burr, is normal after sharpening and after a hard session, but leaving it on makes the edge fragile and wears it away unevenly.

Not all rust is the same problem, and skaters lose good blades by treating every orange mark as a disaster or, worse, by ignoring all of them. Corrosion runs through three fairly clear stages, and what you should do about it changes at each one. Look at the blade under good light, dry, with the guards off.

Grey haze costs you nothing, speckling costs you ten minutes, pitting costs you blade.

Stage one is a dull grey or cloudy film sitting on steel that used to be bright. Nothing has been eaten away yet. Dry it properly, wipe it firmly with a clean dry cloth and get back to your routine. Skaters often panic here and start grinding, which does more damage than the haze ever would.

Stage two is fine orange speckling, and this is the moment to act. Work along the affected area with the fine side of a combination stone such as the Zandstra Foss Combination Sharpening Stone, using light even pressure along the length of the blade rather than across it, then dry the steel and finish the edge with your deburr stone. Take your time and check often. The aim is to lift the corrosion off, not to reshape anything.

Stage three is pitting, where you can see or feel small craters in the running surface. No amount of stone work reaches into a pit, because the surrounding steel has to come down to the depth of the crater before the surface is true again. If the pitting sits on the side of the tube, away from the running surface, it is cosmetic and you can carry on. If it is on the running surface or the edge, get the blade in front of a technician and be ready to hear that it has lost some of its remaining life.

Travel, humidity and Indian rink conditions

Skaters in India face a specific problem that skaters in colder countries mostly do not. You step out of a cold, dry arena into warm, humid air, and condensation forms on cold steel almost immediately, in the same way a cold bottle sweats on a summer afternoon. The blade can be perfectly dry when you pack it and soaking wet ten minutes later, purely from the air.

The fix is to change when you dry, not how. Wipe the blades before you leave the building, fit soakers, and then give the steel a second wipe once everything has warmed up to room temperature at home. Through the monsoon months, and at coastal rinks where the air carries salt, treat that second wipe as compulsory rather than optional. Storing skates in an air conditioned room rather than a cupboard or a balcony makes a real difference too, because you are lowering the humidity around the steel for the twenty three hours a day it is not being skated.

For long journeys, the same rules apply, only more so. Blades should travel in soakers, never in hard guards, and the bag should be opened as soon as you arrive rather than left packed overnight. If you are away at a competition for several days, take the skates out each evening, let them air and refit dry soakers. Carrying a spare pair of soakers on a multi day trip is a small, sensible bit of insurance, since one wet pair with nothing to swap into is how good routines fall apart on the road.

When to replace your guards and soakers

Both of these are consumables, and skaters tend to run them long past useful. A guard is finished when the spring no longer holds it firm on the blade, when the shell has cracked, or when the inner channel has worn wide enough that the blade sits loose and rattles. Any of those means it is no longer protecting the edge, and a guard that falls off halfway across a changing room is worse than no guard at all, because you stop paying attention.

A soaker is finished when the terry cloth has gone thin, matted or hard, or when it holds a smell that will not wash out. Both of those mean the fabric has stopped absorbing properly, and a soaker that does not absorb is just a damp sleeve wrapped around your steel. Hand wash them in cool water whenever they start feeling stale, air dry them fully, and replace them once washing stops restoring the plush feel. Compared to the cost of an edge, replacing either one early is a straightforward decision.
