The Zandstra Foss Sharpening Stone is a professional combination stone for finishing and maintaining speed skating blades. Made by Zandstra, one of the oldest names in skating, it gives you two grit surfaces in a single stone, so you can sharpen and then polish your edges without switching tools.
Two stones in one
The Foss 7205 is a combination stone with a coarse side and a fine side. The coarse side does the sharpening, cutting a clean edge back onto the blade, and the fine side does the polishing, smoothing that edge to a fast, glassy finish. Working from coarse to fine is exactly the sequence a good sharpening routine follows, and this stone lets you do both with a single block.
Silicon carbide, flattened for a true edge
The stone is made from silicon carbide abrasive and flattened after production, so the working surface is genuinely flat. That matters more than most skaters realise. A stone that has dished or worn unevenly puts a rounded or uneven edge on the blade, which shows up as a loss of grip and glide. A true flat stone gives you a true flat edge, which is why this is a favourite among skaters who expect the best sharpening result.
How to use it
- Clamp your blades straight and level in a sharpening jig.
- Start with the coarse side to cut a fresh, even edge along the blade.
- Turn the stone over and work the fine side to polish the edge smooth.
- Remove the burr and check that the edge is even along the full length.
- Wipe the blade down and store it in guards.

Frequently asked questions
What is the difference between the two sides?
One side is coarse for sharpening and cutting a fresh edge, the other is fine for polishing that edge smooth. You work coarse first, then fine.
Do I need a jig to use it?
For a consistent edge, yes. Clamp the blades straight in a sharpening jig, then run the stone along them. Our EHS sharpening jig holds the blades perfectly straight.
Does it work for short track and long track blades?
Yes, it suits both. It is a general purpose speed skating sharpening stone.
How do I keep the stone in good condition?
Keep it clean and dry, and store it flat. A flat stone is what gives you a flat, true edge.
