What the burr is and why you remove it

When you sharpen a blade, the grinding action leaves a tiny lip of raised metal along the edge. That lip is the burr. If you leave it on, the edge feels sharp at first but it is fragile, it can catch on the ice, and it wears away unevenly, so your edge does not last. Running the diamond deburr stone along the blade knocks that lip off and leaves a true, clean edge that grips well and holds up. It is the quiet step that separates a good sharpen from a great one.

How to use it

1. Sharpen your blades as normal and finish the edge.
2. Hold the deburr stone flat against the side of the blade.
3. Run it along the full length of the blade in a few light, even passes.
4. Check that the edge feels clean and even, with no raised lip.
5. Wipe the blade down and store it in guards.
