Walk into any serious inline speed skating team tent before a race and you will notice something. Skaters are not racing on the wheels they trained on that morning. There is a bag with a second set in it, often barely used, and it comes out about an hour before the start. To a newer skater this looks like an expensive habit, or worse, a superstition. It is neither. It is one of the most rational decisions in the sport, and once you understand what actually happens to a wheel as it wears, it becomes hard to argue with.
This guide explains what changes inside and outside a wheel as you put kilometres through it, why those changes matter more in a race than in training, when a second set genuinely earns its keep, and how to run a two set system so that you are not simply spending twice as much money for the same result. What actually happens to a wheel as it wears
A speed wheel is a lump of urethane bonded to a rigid hub. When you skate, three separate things are happening to it, and only one of them is obvious.
The wheel gets smaller
This is the obvious one. A 110mm wheel that has been through a season of hard training is no longer 110mm. Diameter is what turns your stride into distance covered, so every millimetre you lose is speed you have to make up with effort. Two skaters with identical technique on identical frames will not roll the same distance per stride if one is on fresh steel sized wheels and the other is on a well used set. It is quiet, invisible and completely unavoidable.
The profile goes out of shape
Wheels rarely wear evenly. Because you spend most of your skating on the inside edge, the inner shoulder of the wheel wears faster than the outer, and the round profile turns into a lopsided cone. This is what skaters mean when they talk about coning. A coned wheel has a smaller contact patch on one side than the other, which means it grips differently depending on which way you are leaning. The urethane itself changes
Urethane is not inert. Heat cycling, ultraviolet light, oxidation and simple age all stiffen it over time. A wheel that has spent two seasons on a hot Indian track has a different rebound to a wheel out of the box, even if the tread depth looks acceptable. Rebound is what returns energy to you at the end of every push. When it fades, the wheel feels dead underfoot long before it looks worn out, and that feeling is not in your head.
A worn wheel loses diameter and wears into a cone, so it rolls less distance per stride and grips differently depending on which way you lean.
Why racers keep a separate race set
Put those three effects together and the argument makes itself. On race day you want maximum diameter, an even round profile that grips predictably in both directions, and urethane that still has its rebound. Training does the opposite of all three, and the vast majority of your kilometres are training kilometres.
There is a second, less technical reason, and experienced racers rate it just as highly. Confidence. Knowing that your wheels are round, fresh and behaving identically on both feet removes an entire category of doubt from your mind at the start line. On a day when you are already managing nerves, pacing and tactics, that is worth something real.
Where the gains actually show up
The difference is largest in the events where grip and rebound are loaded hardest. Tight indoor track racing punishes an uneven profile immediately, because you are cornering constantly in one direction. Long road races punish lost diameter, because the deficit compounds over every stride for an hour or more. The wheel lifecycle: how a two set system really works
The common misunderstanding is that a two set system means buying twice as many wheels. It does not. It means routing the same wheels through a sequence of roles so that they are always doing the job they are best suited to at that moment.
A two set system is a queue, not extra spending. Each new set becomes the race set, and everything below it shuffles down a level.
The practical version looks like this. When you buy a fresh set, it becomes the race set. The previous race set, which still has plenty of life and a good profile, becomes the training set. The old training set gets demoted to spares for rough surfaces, wet mornings and travel, and the set below that gets retired. Over a season you buy roughly the same number of wheels you would have bought anyway, but the wheels on your feet at the start line are always the best ones you own.
How to make a race set last
A race set only stays fresh if you protect it deliberately. A few habits make the difference.
- Mount the race set the day before, not five minutes before the start, so you have time to notice a problem.
- Do your warm up laps on them so they are up to temperature and you are used to the feel, then take them off after the event.
- Rotate the race set every time you use it, even if you have only done one race on them.
- Store them out of direct sunlight and away from heat, because ultraviolet light and heat age urethane faster than skating does.
- Keep them off gritty surfaces and car parks entirely. Grit tears urethane in a way that clean track surface never does.
- Label the set and mark which position each wheel came from, so your rotation actually means something.
Rotation is what makes the system work
Rotation is the single highest value habit in wheel care, and it matters even more on a race set because you have fewer sessions in which to even out the wear. The goal is to keep every wheel wearing at a similar rate and to keep coning symmetrical rather than letting one wheel take all the damage.
Swap wheel positions and flip each wheel so the worn shoulder faces outward. This is how you keep a set round for longer.

When one set is genuinely enough
Not everybody needs two sets, and pretending otherwise would be dishonest. Keep one set if any of these describe you.
- You are in your first year or two and your technique is still changing quickly. Improvements in your push will outweigh anything a fresh set of wheels gives you.
- You are a junior who is still growing. Frame and boot changes will overtake your wheel plan anyway, which we cover in our guide to buying gear for a growing junior skater.
- You race two or three times a season. A set that is only lightly used will still be in good shape when race day comes.
- Your budget is finite and something else in your setup is a bigger limiter. Bearings that are dry, a frame that is too short for your event, or a boot that does not fit will all cost you more than slightly worn wheels.

Choosing what goes in each set
Once you commit to two sets, you can be smarter than simply buying the same wheel twice.
The training set
Training wheels should be durable and predictable rather than maximally fast. Many skaters run a firmer compound for training because it lasts longer on rough or dusty surfaces and because skating on a slightly less grippy wheel forces cleaner technique. A fresh race set on tired bearings is a wasted upgrade. Strip, clean and oil your bearings when you build the race set, using a proper skate specific lubricant such as Speedslick Pro bearing oil. Two sets of wheels and one good bearing set that you move between them is a perfectly sensible arrangement, and it is what many skaters actually do.
Thinking about value for money over a season
The right way to judge a wheel is not what it costs on the day but what it costs per kilometre of useful skating. A set that stays round for longer, that you rotate properly and that gets demoted rather than binned when it stops being race worthy delivers far more value than a set that gets skated into the hub and thrown away. Track your own kilometres per set for a season and you will very quickly learn which compound suits your surfaces and your body weight, and you will stop guessing.
Frequently asked questions
How many races should a race set last?
There is no universal number, because surface, body weight, temperature and technique all change the rate of wear enormously. Judge by profile and diameter rather than by a race count. When the set no longer looks round after rotation, it has become a training set.
Can I race on my training wheels?
Absolutely, and plenty of skaters do. You will simply be giving away a small amount of roll and a little cornering confidence. For local events and early season racing that is a perfectly reasonable trade.
Should the training set be the same size as the race set?
Ideally yes, or very close. Training on a noticeably different diameter changes your stance and your stride length, so you spend the first laps of a race adapting instead of racing. If the sizes must differ, do your important sessions on the diameter you intend to race.
Do I need a second set of bearings too?
No. One good set of bearings moved between wheel sets is fine, and it is cheaper than duplicating them. Just be careful during the swap, keep the bearings clean, and give them fresh oil when you build the race set.
Does keeping wheels in the bag preserve them?
Partly. Storing wheels out of sunlight and heat definitely slows ageing, but urethane still hardens slowly over the years. A race set that has sat unused for three seasons is not the same wheel it was when you bought it.
Two sets is not about having more equipment. It is about making sure the equipment you already own is doing the job it is best at on the day it matters most. Set up the queue, rotate religiously, and your race day wheels will always be the best pair you have.
